DAS ALBUM, DAS EINE LEGENDE SCHUF
Es gibt Alben, die erfolgreich sind.
Es gibt Alben, die Klassiker werden.
Und dann gibt es Alben, die eine ganze Musikrichtung verändern.
The Number Of The Beast gehört ohne jeden Zweifel in die letzte Kategorie.
Ich war bereits Fan von Iron Maiden, als Killers erschien. Die Energie der Band, die galoppierenden Bassläufe von Steve Harris und die Gitarren von Dave Murray hatten mich längst gepackt.
Aber ich muss ehrlich sein:
So sehr ich Paul Di’Anno respektierte, ich gehörte nie zu den Fans, die ihn für den ultimativen Iron-Maiden-Sänger hielten.
Bis heute wird darüber diskutiert. Viele behaupten, Di’Anno sei der bessere Sänger gewesen.
Das darf jeder sehen, wie er möchte.
Für mich persönlich ging die Sonne erst auf, als ich zum ersten Mal The Number Of The Beast auf den Plattenteller legte.
Plötzlich war alles größer.
Epischer.
Melodischer.
Mächtiger.
Bruce Dickinson brachte eine völlig neue Dimension in die Musik von Iron Maiden. Seine Stimme öffnete Türen, die zuvor verschlossen waren. Die Band klang plötzlich wie eine Naturgewalt.
Und was dann aus den Lautsprechern kam, gehört bis heute zum Besten, was der Heavy Metal jemals hervorgebracht hat.
INVADERS
Ohne Vorwarnung eröffnet „Invaders“ das Album mit Vollgas.
Steve Harris treibt die Band gnadenlos nach vorne, während Bruce Dickinson sofort klarmacht, dass eine neue Ära begonnen hat.
Nicht der bekannteste Song des Albums, aber ein perfekter Auftakt für das, was noch folgen sollte.
CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED
Der erste große Gänsehautmoment.
„Children Of The Damned“ beginnt ruhig und fast zerbrechlich, entwickelt sich aber Stück für Stück zu einem emotionalen Höhepunkt.
Dickinson zeigt hier erstmals sein gesamtes Können.
Die ruhigen Passagen.
Die explosiven Ausbrüche.
Die unglaubliche Dynamik.
Ein Meisterstück.
THE PRISONER
Das legendäre Intro aus der britischen Fernsehserie macht sofort klar, welcher Song folgt.
„The Prisoner“ ist pure Energie.
Ein treibender Rhythmus, starke Gitarrenarbeit und ein Refrain, der sich sofort im Gedächtnis festsetzt.
Bis heute gehört der Song zu den stärksten Stücken der frühen Maiden-Jahre.
22 ACACIA AVENUE
Die Fortsetzung der Charlotte-Geschichte gehört für mich zu den meist unterschätzten Songs des Albums.
Hier verbinden Iron Maiden ihre erzählerischen Fähigkeiten mit großartigem Songwriting.
Die Gitarrenharmonien von Dave Murray und Adrian Smith gehören zum Besten, was die Band bis dahin aufgenommen hatte.
THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST
Dann kommt der Moment.
Der Song.
Die Legende.
Schon das gesprochene Intro gehört zu den berühmtesten Einleitungen der Rockgeschichte.
Und danach explodiert die Band.
Das Riff.
Die Gitarren.
Die Drums.
Die Atmosphäre.
Und natürlich Bruce Dickinsons legendärer Schrei.
Für mich ist „The Number Of The Beast“ einer der größten Heavy-Metal-Songs aller Zeiten.
Ein Meisterwerk.
Nicht weniger.
RUN TO THE HILLS
Wenn es eine Hymne gibt, die den Heavy Metal bis heute repräsentiert, dann ist es „Run To The Hills“.
Dieser Song hat alles.
Ein legendäres Riff.
Einen unsterblichen Refrain.
Eine unglaubliche Gesangsleistung.
Und Drummer Clive Burr trommelt hier, als gäbe es kein Morgen.
Mehr als vierzig Jahre später bringt dieser Song noch immer ganze Stadien zum Ausrasten.
GANGELAND
Oft etwas im Schatten der großen Klassiker.
Zu Unrecht.
„Gangland“ ist ein hervorragender Heavy-Metal-Song mit starken Riffs und großartiger Rhythmusarbeit.
Auf vielen anderen Alben wäre dieser Song ein absolutes Highlight.
Hier steht er lediglich zwischen einigen der größten Metal-Songs aller Zeiten.
HALLOWED BE THY NAME
Und dann kommt der Höhepunkt.
Nicht nur dieses Albums.
Sondern möglicherweise der gesamten frühen Iron-Maiden-Karriere.
„Hallowed Be Thy Name“ ist Perfektion.
Die Atmosphäre.
Der Spannungsaufbau.
Die Lyrics.
Die Gitarren.
Die Emotion.
Alles stimmt.
Wenn mich jemand fragen würde, wie Heavy Metal klingt, könnte ich einfach diesen Song auflegen.
Mehr Erklärung wäre nicht nötig.
Ein absolutes Meisterwerk.
MARTIN BIRCH – DER MANN HINTER DEM SOUND
Viel zu oft wird vergessen, welchen Anteil Produzent Martin Birch am Erfolg dieses Albums hatte.
Der Sound ist druckvoll, transparent und dennoch roh genug, um gefährlich zu wirken.
Jedes Instrument hat Raum.
Jede Melodie kann atmen.
Auch heute klingt dieses Album noch erstaunlich frisch.
ROCK POP IN CONCERT – DER MOMENT, ALS ICH FAN FÜRS LEBEN WURDE
Meine Begeisterung für Iron Maiden begann mit diesem Album.
Zum Fan fürs Leben wurde ich jedoch erst wenig später.
Als ich Iron Maiden damals bei Rock Pop In Concert sah, war es endgültig um mich geschehen.
Was die Band dort auf die Bühne brachte, war absolute Weltspitzenklasse.
Die Energie.
Die Präzision.
Die Bühnenpräsenz.
Die Ausstrahlung.
Und natürlich Bruce Dickinson.
Alles wirkte größer als das Leben selbst.
Genau dort wurde aus einem begeisterten Hörer ein lebenslanger Fan.
Und wenn man sich anschaut, was Iron Maiden heute noch leisten, überrascht ihr Erfolg überhaupt nicht.
Auch im Jahr 2026 füllen Iron Maiden weltweit Arenen und Stadien.
Europa.
Nordamerika.
Südamerika.
Asien.
Australien.
Überall folgen ihnen die Fans in Scharen.
Warum?
Weil Iron Maiden nie aufgehört haben, Iron Maiden zu sein.
Sie haben Trends ignoriert.
Sie haben ihren eigenen Weg verfolgt.
Und sie haben sich ihre Glaubwürdigkeit über Jahrzehnte bewahrt.
Für mich sind Iron Maiden deshalb nicht nur eine der größten Heavy-Metal-Bands aller Zeiten.
Sie sind die unangefochtenen Könige der New Wave Of British Heavy Metal.
Saxon, Diamond Head, Raven, Angel Witch, Tygers Of Pan Tang und viele andere haben Großartiges geleistet.
Doch nur eine Band wurde zu einer weltweiten Institution.
Diese Band heißt Iron Maiden.
Und The Number Of The Beast war der Moment, in dem aus einer großartigen Band eine Legende wurde.
FAZIT
Es gibt Alben, die man respektiert.
Es gibt Alben, die man liebt.
Und es gibt Alben, die einen ein Leben lang begleiten.
The Number Of The Beast gehört für mich eindeutig zur letzten Kategorie.
Dieses Album hat alles, was Heavy Metal ausmacht:
Großartige Songs.
Legendäre Gitarren.
Eine überragende Gesangsleistung.
Melodien für die Ewigkeit.
Und eine Band auf dem Weg zur Weltherrschaft.
Mehr als vier Jahrzehnte später klingt dieses Album noch immer frisch, hungrig und voller Energie.
Wenn jemand wissen möchte, warum Iron Maiden zu den größten Bands der Musikgeschichte gehören, braucht man ihm nur dieses Album in die Hand zu drücken.
Der Rest erledigt sich von selbst.

THE ALBUM THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Some albums become successful.
Some albums become classics.
And then there are albums that redefine an entire genre.
The Number Of The Beast belongs firmly in that final category.
I was already an Iron Maiden fan when Killers was released. Steve Harris‘ galloping bass lines, Dave Murray’s guitar work, and the raw energy of the band had already won me over.
But if I’m being completely honest, I was never one of those fans who considered Paul Di’Anno the ultimate Iron Maiden vocalist.
Even today, many fans argue that Di’Anno was the better singer.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
For me personally, however, the sun truly rose the first time I dropped the needle onto The Number Of The Beast and let that record spin until it practically melted from overuse.
Suddenly everything was bigger.
More epic.
More melodic.
More powerful.
Bruce Dickinson brought an entirely new dimension to Iron Maiden. His voice opened doors that simply weren’t available before. The band suddenly sounded larger than life.
What followed was one of the greatest Heavy Metal albums ever recorded.
INVADERS
The album wastes no time.
„Invaders“ explodes out of the speakers with speed, aggression, and pure energy.
Steve Harris drives the song relentlessly forward while Bruce Dickinson immediately announces the arrival of a new era.
Perhaps not the most celebrated track on the album, but a perfect opener that sets the tone for everything to come.
CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED
Then comes the first truly magical moment.
„Children Of The Damned“ begins quietly and almost delicately before slowly building toward one of the album’s most emotional climaxes.
Dickinson’s performance here is breathtaking.
The dynamics.
The control.

The emotion.
This song perfectly demonstrates why hiring Bruce Dickinson was one of the greatest decisions Iron Maiden ever made.
THE PRISONER

More than four decades later, this song still ignites entire stadiums.
That says everything.
GANGLAND
Often overshadowed by the giants surrounding it, „Gangland“ deserves far more recognition than it usually receives.
Featuring excellent drumming, sharp riffs, and strong songwriting, it would be considered a highlight on many other albums.
Its only crime is sharing space with some of the greatest Heavy Metal songs ever recorded.

If someone asked me to explain Heavy Metal, I could simply play them this song.
No further explanation would be necessary.
This is Heavy Metal at its absolute peak.
THE MARTIN BIRCH FACTOR
Far too often, producer Martin Birch does not receive the credit he deserves for this masterpiece.
The production is powerful, clear, and aggressive without sacrificing warmth or atmosphere.
Every instrument breathes.

Even today, the album sounds remarkably fresh and alive.
That is the mark of truly timeless production.

My love for Iron Maiden began with this album.

I was completely hooked.

That performance transformed me from a fan into a lifelong believer.

Australia.
Everywhere they go, thousands upon thousands of fans follow.
Why?
Because Iron Maiden never stopped being Iron Maiden.
They ignored trends.
They stayed true to their identity.
They never compromised their vision.
And because of that, they remain one of the most respected bands in music history.
For me, Iron Maiden are not just one of the greatest Heavy Metal bands of all time.
They are the true kings of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal.
Many incredible bands emerged from the movement.
Saxon.
Diamond Head.
Raven.
Angel Witch.
Tygers Of Pan Tang.
And many others.
But only one band became a worldwide institution.
That band is Iron Maiden.
And The Number Of The Beast was the album that transformed them from rising stars into legends.
