Wenn man den Namen Rachel Bolan hört, denkt man unweigerlich an Skid Row. An die wilden Tage des Sunset Strip, an „Slave To The Grind“, an die markante Nasen-Ohren-Kette und natürlich an einige der größten Hard-Rock-Hymnen der frühen Neunziger.
Mit „Gargoyle Of The Garden State“ zeigt der mittlerweile 62-jährige Bassist jedoch eine ganz andere Seite seiner musikalischen Persönlichkeit.
Wer hier ein weiteres Skid-Row-Album erwartet, liegt völlig falsch.
Stattdessen nutzt Bolan sein Solodebüt, um seine Leidenschaft für klassischen Punk Rock auszuleben. Dabei bewegt er sich souverän zwischen Ramones-Feeling, dreckigem Street Punk, Glam-Einflüssen, New Wave und gelegentlichen Britpop-Momenten.
Unterstützt wird er dabei von einer beeindruckenden Gästeliste. Mit dabei sind unter anderem Danko Jones, Corey Taylor, Nuno Bettencourt und natürlich sein langjähriger Skid-Row-Weggefährte Snake Sabo.
PUNK ROCK STATT SKID ROW
Das Album lebt von seiner Ehrlichkeit.
Rachel Bolan ist sicherlich kein perfekter Sänger. Doch genau darin liegt einer der größten Pluspunkte dieser Platte.
Seine Stimme besitzt Charakter.
Sie klingt rau.
Unpoliert.
Ehrlich.
Und erinnert damit an die großen Punkrock-Frontmänner, bei denen Attitüde stets wichtiger war als technische Perfektion.
Ähnlich wie bei Rancid oder den frühen Social Distortion entsteht die Magie nicht durch makellosen Gesang, sondern durch Glaubwürdigkeit.
Und davon besitzt Bolan reichlich.
DIE SONGS
Bereits die schnellen Punkrock-Nummern „Anything But You“, „At War With Myself“ und „Big Stick“ machen sofort klar, wohin die Reise geht.
Kurze, direkte Songs voller Energie, rotziger Gitarren und eingängiger Refrains.
Vor allem bei „Big Stick“ schweben die Geister der Ramones durch jede Note.
Doch Bolan beschränkt sich nicht nur auf Vollgas-Punk.
Mit „Bridges“ zeigt er eine deutlich emotionalere Seite. Der Song bietet Luft zum Atmen und beweist, dass hinter der rauen Schale durchaus viel Gefühl steckt.
Eine der größten Überraschungen des Albums ist die Neuinterpretation von Oasis‘ „Rock And Roll Star“.
Anstatt das Original zu kopieren, verpasst Bolan dem Song eine schmutzige, dreckige und fast schon straßenköterhafte Note, die hervorragend zum Gesamtkonzept passt.
PRODUKTION
Produziert wurde das Album von Nick Raskulinecz, dessen Referenzen von den Foo Fighters bis zu Stone Sour reichen.
Sein größter Verdienst besteht darin, dass er dem Album nicht den modernen Hochglanz-Look verpasst hat, den viele Produktionen heute besitzen.
Stattdessen klingt „Gargoyle Of The Garden State“ roh, direkt und beinahe live eingespielt.
Genau das verleiht der Platte ihre Authentizität.
Hier stehen Songs und Persönlichkeit im Mittelpunkt – nicht Studio-Tricks oder digitale Perfektion.

When you hear the name Rachel Bolan, most people immediately think of Skid Row. The legendary bassist with the unmistakable nose-to-ear chain, the Sunset Strip glory days, and some of the most iconic hard rock records of the late ’80s and early ’90s.
With „Gargoyle Of The Garden State“, however, Bolan reveals a very different side of his musical personality.
Anyone expecting a Skid Row-style album should adjust their expectations immediately.
This record is a love letter to old-school punk rock, with occasional detours into glam, new wave, and Britpop territory. It’s raw, unfiltered, and unapologetically personal.
And Bolan didn’t come alone.
